🔢 Place Value: Hundreds, Tens, and Ones

Every digit in a number has a place that tells you how much it is worth!

  • Ones place: The rightmost digit. It tells how many single ones you have.
  • Tens place: The middle digit. Each ten is worth 10 ones.
  • Hundreds place: The leftmost digit in a 3-digit number. Each hundred is worth 100 ones!
Example: The number 347
3 hundreds (300) + 4 tens (40) + 7 ones (7) = 347
Think of it like: 3 big boxes of 100, 4 stacks of 10, and 7 loose ones!

🧠 Advanced Place Value

Expanded form: 528 = 500 + 20 + 8. Breaking numbers apart helps you add and subtract!

Comparing 3-digit numbers: Start with the hundreds digit. If hundreds are the same, check tens. If tens match too, check ones.

🏆 Challenge: What is the biggest 3-digit number you can make with 4, 7, and 2? Put the biggest digit in the hundreds place: 742!

➕ Adding Bigger Numbers

When adding numbers within 100, you can break apart numbers to make it easier!

36 + 47:
Break 47 into 40 + 7. Add 36 + 40 = 76. Then 76 + 7 = 83!

Or make a 10: 36 + 4 = 40, then 40 + 43 = 83!

➖ Subtracting Bigger Numbers

For subtraction, you can count up from the smaller number!

72 - 38:
Start at 38, count up to 40 (+2), then to 70 (+30), then to 72 (+2). Total: 2 + 30 + 2 = 34!

🧠 Regrouping (Borrowing)

Sometimes you need to regroup. If you can't subtract the ones, borrow a ten!

🏆 Challenge: ___ + 28 = 75. Work backwards: 75 - 28 = 47!

A ruler helps you find how long something is. Start at 0 and count the lines!

  • Inches (in) and centimeters (cm) are units of measurement
  • A paperclip is about 1 inch long

The short hand points to the hour. The long hand points to the minutes.

When the long hand is on 12, it's o'clock.
When the long hand is on 6, it's :30 (half past).
When the long hand is on 3, it's :15 (quarter past).

Penny = 1 cent, Nickel = 5 cents, Dime = 10 cents, Quarter = 25 cents

🏆 Challenge: You have 2 quarters, 1 dime, and 3 pennies. How much? 25 + 25 + 10 + 3 = 63 cents!
